Steps for Making an Occupied Bed

  1. Gather clean linens and place them on a clean, dry surface near the bed.
  2. Set laundry basket near the bed to easily deposit dirty linens as you remove them.
  3. Apply gloves.
  4. If applicable, raise the adjustable bed to a comfortable working position. Raise the side rails on the side you are NOT working on.
  5. Place bed in a flat position.
  6. Loosen the blankets and top sheet at the foot of the bed.
  7. Fold comforter and blankets down to the foot of the bed.  Remove folded comforter and blankets and place on a chair or other clean surface in the room.
  8. Place a clean sheet over the top sheet.  Ask the client to hold the clean sheet in place. Remove dirty top sheet by sliding it out under the clean sheet. Place the dirty sheet in the laundry basket.
  9. Assist the client to turn on his or her side (facing away from you).  Ask the client to hold onto side rail (if possible) to keep from rolling back.
  10. Loosen bottom sheet and mattress pad on your side and roll to the client's back.
  11. Place the clean mattress pad on bed lengthwise with the fold in the center.  Tuck mattress pad under the mattress on the side you are on.
  12. Place bottom sheet lengthwise with a fold in the center and tuck under the mattress on your side.
  13. Fan fold bottom sheet close to the client’s back.
  14. Raise the bed rail on your side and assist the client in turning to face you.
  15. Go to opposite side of the bed and lower the side rail.
  16. Pull off the soiled bottom linen and place in the laundry basket.
  17. Pull the clean mattress pad toward the edge of the bed and tuck under the mattress.
  18. Pull the clean bottom sheet toward the edge of the bed and tuck it under the mattress.
  19. Assist the client to the center of the bed.
  20. Replace blankets and comforter over the top sheet.
  21. Tuck sheet, blanket, and comforter under the mattress at the foot of the bed.
  22. Change pillowcase and place pillow under the client's head.
  23. Lower the bed and rails.
  24. Remove gloves and wash your hands.
