Setting Up a CPAP Machine
Does your client use a CPAP machine because of sleep apnea? Follow these steps to assist your client in setting it up.
- Place the machine on a flat surface beside the bed. It should have plenty of space all around it for the vents to flow freely.
- Plug in the machine to the nearest outlet, avoiding the use of extension cords, if possible.
- Always check the humidifier before starting the machine. Fill the water cup to the line with distilled water only. Using tap water will make the machine difficult to clean.
- Assist client in washing his or her face before applying the mask. This removes any make-up, lotions, or oils that can keep the mask from sealing properly.
- Help client get into a comfortable sleeping position in bed.
- Apply the mask. Allow your client to apply the mask on his own, of possible. If he has been using it for a while, he knows best how to get it in the correct position.
- Check to see if the mask fits snugly on the face and all tubing is connected and free of kinks.
- Turn on the machine.
IMPORTANT: Your client’s machines should already have the proper pressure set. This is based on the doctor’s prescription. You should never adjust the pressure settings on your client’s CPAP machine.
