Cleaning a CPAP Machine
Does your client use a CPAP machine at night? If so, follow these steps to help maintain the cleanliness of the machine.
Every day:
- Wipe down the mask using a damp towel with mild detergent and warm water. Gently rinse with a clean towel and let the mask air-dry.
At least once a week:
- Wipe down the outside of the machine to remove dust or dirt from the exterior.
- Empty any remaining water in the humidifier cup and wash with warm water and mild soap. Air dry.
- Clean the tubing, mask, and headgear thoroughly once a week, or more often if your client is sick.
a) Fill a clean sink or plastic bin with warm soapy water. Lay the tubing, mask, and headgear in the water. Swirl the parts around and allow to soak for about five minutes.
b) Rinse well and air dry. Hang the tubing over a towel bar or shower curtain rod so the water can drip out. The mask and headgear can air dry on a clean towel.
IMPORTANT: Never use chlorine bleach, scented soaps, or alcohol to clean the parts of a CPAP machine. These products could damage the machine and harm the client.
